About Lake Lanier

Lake Lanier is the most popular lake in the southeast, with several million visitors per year enjoying its recreational activities. Lanier is Georgia’s largest lake, with approximately 700 miles of shoreline spread across 38,000 acres.

Lake Lanier derives its water from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia. Rain falls over the mountains, cascades over spectacular waterfalls, and finally flows down the Chattahoochee and Chestatee rivers to Lake Lanier.

The Chattahoochee and Chestatee Rivers were turned into Lake Lanier by the construction of the Buford Dam on the lake’s south end in 1956.

Lake Lanier has something for everyone. Though fishing, boating, and camping are the most popular activities, Lake Lanier includes activities for the entire family. Lake Lanier includes golfing facilities as well as some of the top kayaking, water sports, and swimming sites in the world. You will have a good time at Lake Lanier.
