The city of Gainesville, originally called "Mule Camp Springs", was established in the 1800's. It was chosen as the county seat for Hall County on November 30, 1821. The name "Gainesville" was chosen in honor of war hero General Edmund P. Gaines.

Gainesville has received many titles over the years because of its location and because of its people. The most notable are Queen City of the Mountains and the Poultry Capital. Its most recent designation came during 1996 when the city served as host for the 1996 Olympic Rowing / Kayaking Venue. An NBC broadcaster called Gainesville, "Hospitality Capital of the World."

Gainesville is located on Lake Lanier, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The city is considered the trade, industrial, recreational and cultural center of Northeast Georgia.
